We went straight from the airport in Athens, to Nafplio.

Travel report from day 1 (Friday April 14th 2000)

We’ve arrived at Nafplio. It’s obvious that this is a popular town with lots of Tourists, and this reflected on the boarding prizes. Rooms in old hotels, build in the sixties, cost somewhere around 20 000 drachmas or more. This was in the middle of the old town. We found a room right outside the old town, 3 beds, an old but ok bathroom, and a small colour TV that Inge really appreciates, for 15 000 drachmas. In summer there is air-condition in the room. Now, in April, the temperature is just right. What little we’ve seen of the town so fare has been very charming. There’s a nice mix of tavern's, cafe’s and pubs, and exiting shops for window-shopping. There’s an old castle right above the town on a very steep hill. In the harbour there’s an other old castle on an islet. I hope to get a chance to visit both tomorrow.

We’re staying here two nights before driving south. On the way here the temperature was 28*C (in Athens), a lot warmer then we'd hoped it would be. Now it’s about 15*C but still absolutely beautiful compared to what we left behind in Sandnes this morning. The next couple of days we’re going to drive around the area to seek out more "Ancient places" as the signs down here call them. The scenery is just as green and exuberant as we hoped. There will be used quite a few rolls of film in the days to come!

Travel report from day 1 (Saturday April 15th 2000) (written at Sunday)

We’re still here in Nafplio (we stayed for 3 nights) There are so many things to see in this area that we decided to stay a day longer. Also work at home and a long journey down here has left us quite tired, so we’ve decided to take it easy the first couple of days. Saturday we were lucky enough to find a market here in Nafplio. There were booths in a long row of several 100 meters with all kinds of stuff for sale. Mostly fruit and vegetables. The oranges are harvested now, and so are the other citrus fruits such as lemons and grapefruits. The motives for me who likes to take pictures where incredible, very colourful. But there were also clothes, shoes, glassware, ceramics, and other things, not to mention all the fish and other exciting seafood (and exciting smells as well). There were lots of people and the merchants had a competition on who could shout the loudest. In other words a real market with the right atmosphere. After having taken enough photos vi started the climb up to the fort which lies high above Nafplio town.

Travel report from day 1 continues

After going back down our legs felt like gallop then we went to the hotel and had a lie down. Later we went into the town where we found one charming street after another with exciting shops. We ended up at a taverna which was quite full and we soon found out why. They had really authentic and tasty food. I ordered a ham roll steak with garlic, green chilli, onions, tomatoes and lovely Greek spices. I chose baked spicy potatoes to go with it and the whole meal was one of the best I’ve ever had in Greece.

Travel report from day 3 (Sunday April 16th 2000 )

Today we’ve been to see Mycenae of the antique and the Larissa fort.

.

This was obviously a weekend town because both Friday and Saturday the streets were full of people, but on Sunday night, when this picture was taken, we were almost the only ones there.

.

The shops where filled with lovely and exciting things.

Travel report from day 4 (Monday April 17th 2000 )

We tried to get out to the fort in Nafplio port. That turned out to be quite difficult. The boats that usually take this trip had all gone out fishing and wouldn’t be back until late afternoon. The reason for this being that the demand for trips to the fort were so small that the boat owners made more money fishing. So there went our trips to that fort. But still it’s a nice excuse to come back another time. Instead we started our journey south towards Monemvasia.
