Upper Monemvasia is an old ruin town situated just above Lower Monemvasia. The Upper part can not be compared to the Lower with regards to the buildings as Upper Monemvasia is visibly older and consequently far from maintained, nor rebuilt at all – only one of the churches is. Nevertheless, the place has definitely got it’s charm and should you be of the fortunate ones to visit it during spring – well, the trip is obligatory! Have a little read of what we wrote about Upper Monemvasia when we visited it, and have a look at the pictures.

Once you have climbed all the steps from Monemvasia, you enter through the gate that leads to Upper Monemvasia.

Travel Diary from Day 5 (Tuesday April 18th 2000):

After having checked out and packed the car, we wanted to have a quick stroll up towards the even older ruin town above Lower Monemvasia called Upper Monemvasia Town. You will find an old road/path leading upwards from the middle of the castle, and if we had been overexcited by the castle itself – we were left almost speechless when we arrived on the top and saw all the flora living in-between the ruins. We have actually never seen anything like it! The bushes and flowers were more than 2 metres tall and in all imaginable colours – it really gave our cameras a workout. The more we see, the more convinced we get that it is definitely during spring that Greece should be visited. It is still almost like a Norwegian summer with maximum temperatures of around 26 degrees inland and around 23 degrees on the coast. At night the temperatures drop to around 15 degrees, but that is only late at night.
