When you are driving the main road from Ancient Mycenae, going to Nafplio, you have to drive through the city Argos. When you are arriving Argos you can see a castle on the top of a hill behind the city. We just had to make a visit to this castle. The walls around were very much intact, but inside the fortification the most was destroyed and overgrown with grass and flowers. There were no guards or entrance fee like it would be on more famous archaeological places. But first, let us see two pictures of a flowery meadow we discovered on our way up here.

Travel report continues from day 3 (Sunday April 16th 2000)

On our way up to Ancient Mycenae and Larissa fortification, we found an unbelievable meadow. It was covered with thousands and thousands of dark red poppies. They were almost purple. In between we could see some light yellow and white ones. We have never ever seen anything like this, it must be experienced. I’m afraid that these pictures never will do the meadow the justice it deserves.

Here is an attempt to show you the beauty of the meadow

It is not strange at all that Anne Grete has a big smile on her face

Larissa fortification

Finally, we visited another castle called "Castle of Larissa". This castle had fairly well preserved walls and had a great location on top of a hill. It looked like it was not so old as many of the other things in the same area. Tomorrow, first we will visit the castle located on a little islet in the ocean, just outside the city of Nafplio. Then we travel about 125 miles south, almost to the south-east point of Peloponnesus. This was a little bit of our experiences these last days, we will see if we can find some internet cafe’s on our way.

The fortification is situated much higher than the surrounding area.

The view over Argos. It looks like it is built in circles, starting in the
centre of the city.
