How to travel from Athens Airport to centre of Athens and to Pireaus and Rafina

On march 30th of 2001 the large new International Airport of Athens was opened. It lies 27 km northeast of central Athens, which is in the direction of Rafina. All arrivals and departures are now concentrated in one terminal. This facilitates transfer to domestic flights. Unfortunately the new roads are not finished and traffic can therefore be quite chaotic. Neither the airport-metro will be finished until June 2004.

For tourists there are really just two ways of getting to or from the airport. Those being bus or taxi. Bus is an excellent alternative. Just outside exits 4 and 5 of the terminal you will find the express bus that goes to the center of town as well as the one going to Piraeus. Exit 4 and 5 are the ones closest at hand for those travelling inside the Schengen-area.

For Athens there are two lines. No 94 that leaves for the nearest Metro station (The Ethniki Amina station) and takes 40 minutes. No 95 takes you all the way to the center of Athens, To Syntagma Square. This bus does not continue towards Omonia like the bus from the old airport did. It stops quite a lot of times on its way to Syntagma. The bus for Piraeus, E 96 also stops a lot, has quite a long distance to go and the estimated duration of the trip is 100 minutes. All these buses run more or less around the clock.

The fare for all 3 lines will be 2,90 € 24h. Note that the ticket is valid for 24 hours of free transfer to all public transportation in Athens. The ticket is valid for one journey between the airport and the city. The ticket is only to be stamped the first time it is used. After that it is valid for 24 hours on all public transportation in Athens. Hold on to the ticket in case of control. For more information on tickets and means of communication in Athens, read the next page. Here you will find more information's about all the express buses to and from the airport:

Her at this webpage you will find a good map of all the express buses.

From July 10th of 2001 there has also been a bus route between the airport and the seaside town Rafina. This bus leaves from the airport and from Rafina every 40 minutes. (0600 AM to 2120 PM) The fare is 3 € one-way. In Rafina it leaves from the bus-terminal in the harbour and at the airport it leaves from the same spot as the other airport buses. The bus is orange and is marked: Rafina and Athens Airport.

We haven’t tried to use taxi neither from Athens nor from the airport. Hopefully this functions better than before. Normally the queue is acceptable but the use of taxi is associated with other inconveniences. Read more next page. These inconveniences are so big that we prefer the express-bus provided the queue is not very long. Approximate price Airport/Athens during the day is about 12€ and 15€ at night. There is a certain danger of being ripped off by "smart cabbies". The worst example I have heard of is 50€ for this trip. In my opinion this is sheer fraud.
