Kolymbithres is a beach area in the innermost part of the bay of Naoussa. We have always been fascinated by this area because of the very special formations of rocks you can find here. For someone who knows nothing about geology it is very difficult to explain what the rocks themselves look like here. I feel that the photos below give a much better impression of its appearance than my words. I would still like to try. In a very limited area, probably not more than 200 meters wide, you find something that must be a very porous are of rocks. Especially near the water there are many holes in the rocks. The size and depth of these holes vary quite a lot. In some places there are lots of little holes, up to 10 cm wide, and from 3 to 20 cm deep. In other places they are much larger and can pass right through the whole rock.

A view of Kolymbithres from the mountains behind the beach. As you can see the water is very shallow, which makes it warm and nice for a swim very quickly.
Additionally, the rocks themselves appear to be sand-blown. Here there are no knife-sharp edges, everything is rather rounded and rough, so the rocks are very easy to walk and climb. Inbetween you can find small, secluded beaches. The water is very shallow. Since the area is situated in the innermost part of the bay of Naoussa, waves are rare, and thus it is a perfect play- and swimming- ground for children.

Here you can see Naoussa in the background. Boats from Naoussa often come in here. This place is also very easy to reach if you have your own vehicle.

Here the poriness of the rocks and the variety of the holes are very obvious. These holes are just like a climbing wall for children, it is fun and easy to climb here.

Inge, Karoline and Stine find Kolymbithres very exciting, both because of the exciting rocks with all the holes, and all the caves they can creep into. Besides they like the beach very much. There are many small bays where the water is nice and warm, and many places where diving from the rocks is safe. They want to go back every year.
