Mikri Vigla is a small place located 18 km south of Naxos city. It has scattered houses, and a few hotels and taverns. The most important thing that makes people go to this place is two great beaches. One of them, Pathena, lies to the north and is approximately 400 meters long. The other, Sachara, lies west-oriented and is about 3200 meters long. These beaches are some of Greece's finest. The sand can be compared to the sand on Norwegian beaches, e.g. Sjøsanden by Mandal town or Jærstrendene on the Norwegian south-west coast. The northern part of the longest beach lies well protected against the harsh north wind which can blow over the Greek Islands sometimes. You can really bath and use snorkel here even if it's blowing so much that the ferries have to stop. But luckily these violent winds doesn't last long.

The sea is incredibly clean and clear, here at Mikri Vigla, since the beach are far away from any large city. Besides there were few bathers here. I estimate we were between 20 and 30 persons sharing a beach of 3.200 meters length. Marvellous!, as we say in Sandnes (my hometown).

The summer of 1997, Mikri Vigla finally got a small supermarket. This was a great loss when we stayed here the summer of 1996. We had to drive about 8 km to the nearest shop then. This is now the past. This place has for a long time had more different taverns to chose between.

To the north from the longest beach, Sachara. This picture seen together with the one above demonstrate very well our dilemma; What to bring and what to leave at home. It's great to have snorkel equipment on a place like this. The same regards good bath towels on the beach with books and magazines, cooling bag for cold drinks and a large sunshade to lie under. What we chose is easy for you to see. But then we also had to carry lots of heavy bags!

No comments! ;-)

On Mikri Vigla it's possible to rent rooms, hotel and apartments. The summer of 1996 we rented a great bungalow/house. This bungalow lies in a lope about 400 meters from the sea. The view are great, with view to one of the beaches I mentioned, Pathena and further in the background towards Paros. The sunset you can experience from here you just have to see for yourself to believe.

This house we rent in 96. This house is very big. We were 2 families and 7 persons in total. And we had plenty of space.

Perfect view from the terrace. But the days when it was blowing hard, it was very windy out there, because the terrace is open against north and west.

If you are going to stay at Mikri Vigla it's a big plus to have your own vehicle at your disposal. The buses goes seldom out here. Only about two times a day, with up to 3 km to walk to the bus. In high season it's supposed to be buses witch takes you all the way down to Mikri Vigla. But with your own vehicle you are much more free to discover the rest of Naxos whenever you wish to.

Next to Mikri Vigla on a place called Orkos, lies a little apartment hotel (Orkos Village) which actually also are own and managed by a Norwegian.
