The Nero beach.

Nero is a nice beach at, Kato, the neighbour island. To get there you have to take the beach boat from the harbour at Koufonissia. The departure times of the boat vary throughout the season, but it is still easy to find out when it leaves. At the dock where the boat is arriving (the dock behind the main harbour) there is a sign that at all times displays information about departure, destinations and time of return to Koufonissia.

When we visited Koufonissia the summer of 2000, the boat changed its "route" after a few days, but kept to the new one until we left.

We are a bit unsure about the amount of people the boat can take, but what we know is that it was quite crowded with people on our way out to Nero, and even more packed on the way back. We discovered that there is quite a lot of youth staying overnight out there. They had go with the boat back to "town" to get some more supplies, which amongst other stuff were lots of boxes with water.

This is the "beach boat" that goes both to Nero, Finikas and Pori.

The beaches at Koufonissia are really great, but still it can be nice to have a change of venue. The boat trip to the neighbour island is perfect. The boat trip takes about 20 minutes. In order to get a good seat in the boat one has to be there early. You can even risk not getting on board if it is too many people wanting to take the trip to Nero.

The beach was covered with a combination of sand and small stones. Bathing shoes was a necessity since the stones became very hot, even though we most of the time lay flat on the beach with our feet in the water because of the extreme heat that day.

.

We discovered something in the sea we had never seen before. We actually have no idea what it was, but it looked like transparent bags with a small brown lump inside. They were about 20 to 25 cm high and approximately 5 cm wide. They were swimming around in a long row, which occasionally split up in smaller groupings and then got together in larger groups again. If we should compare with something, it looked like a long row of condoms swimming around, but it wasn’t, it was something alive.

For those who enjoy collecting stones, this would be a good beach for that activity with stones in all different colour combinations, which is quite rare. In most places the stones are single coloured, but not here!

Here is the beach boat picking us up again to bring us back to Koufonissia. The boat is usually coming twice a day; the first trip is in the late morning and the second a couple of hours later. We came out with the first trip and returned with the second trip only a few hours later. The sun was really strong this day so a few hours in the heat was actually sufficient!
