23 June, Bonfire Night!
Norsk utgave
(Norwegian edition) ![]()
Every Greek with self-respect makes a flower garland for the 1st of May (the day for celebration of spring and flowers), which he hangs over his front door. Here it remains until midsummer night, when all the garlands are collected. At least that is how they do it in Antiparos. The garlands are piled up down at the port, in several piles in the sand along the waterfront.

This happens at sunset, i.e. between 20,30 and 21.00 (that's how it was the summer of -97) The kids get together, and the tradition is to set fire to the garlands, and when they burn, the kids are allowed to jump over the bonfires.

As you can see from the pictures, the flames get quite big, but the kids jump anyway. It was mostly the boys who jumped. The girls were there, mostly watching, but fortunately at least a few of them jumped over.
