The two most common ways to travel to Greece are either by train or by plane. Euro rail are probably the most common and cheapest way to go by train. Using planes, you can either buy a chartered trip or go on a standard booked flight. Both ways have the pros and cons.

Skiathos easy to get to by charter from Norway.

The destination of standard flights are usually Athens, while chartered flights have many more destinations. If one of these are you specific goal, the choice is easy. But if there are no direct flights you will have to choose. From Athens there are frequent ferries to almost all of the larger Greek Islands. It can also happen that your chose of destination is close to the landing spot for a chartered trip. Then you should find out if there are ferries travelling between the two islands and also how frequently that are going back and forth. If you fail to make this check, you might have to wait for two or three days for the next boat ! You should also check the length of the boat trip. Some of them are up to 8 hours each way…

merkelapp.jpg (15611 bytes)The ticket price is for most people of importance. For standard flights the ticket price usually remains the same through the summer (not always !). For children under the age of 12 there is on most airlines a rebate of 50%. Some airlines even give this rebate up to the age of 16, so call and find out. In most cases it is possible to make reservations several months in advance without paying until a week or two before departure. The ticket prices varies between travel agencies depending on what kind of deals they have with the airlines. You should always check several agencies before buying the ticket/s. Stay away from smaller agencies that demand a large deposit at the time of reservation.

merkeplapp1.jpg (15713 bytes)The price on chartered trips usually vary a great amount through the season and is peaking during school vacation time. For those chartered trips that only include a round trip plane ticket, there is seldom rebate for children. Further, a deposit is common along with full rest payment a month before departure. Airport extra and weekend extra can also be expected.

Therefore, to find the cheapest ticket can be quite a job!

However, there is a rule of thumb. If you are travelling in the midst of summer season with children, a standard roundtrip is almost always the cheapest. If only grown ups are travelling and the exact time of year is not of a major importance, a chartered trip is usually by far the cheapest.

If you are a student, you should of course check for student prices.

Using chartered planes you will have to stay away for full weeks, usually from 1 to 4. For a standard round trip the requirement can be maximum trip duration for one month and to get a reduced price you usually have to stay away at least one night between a Saturday and a Sunday.

To rap it up; Plan your trip well in advance…..
